My older sister had a deck of Mother Earth tarot cards. We would light candles, read each other’s cards and fantasize about our futures. In college, I bought a Rider Waite deck and started reading for my friends. Was he the one? No. Would she get that job? Yes. No. Maybe.
Could the cards actually answer questions?
My best friend always seemed to pull the Three of Cups card with an image of three women dancing, holding golden goblets in celebration.
“The lesbian card! AGAIN! Am I a lesbian?!”
”Do you want to be a lesbian?” I asked. "Is that what you see?”
Yes, that’s what she saw.
I became obsessed with the images, their various meanings, the stories the cards would tell in a particular configuration. I began to understand the cards were not a tool for divination, but rather a kind of Rorschach inkblot test. We see what we want to see. We project our meaning onto everything. This is when my idea for my one woman show was born. I could tell stories from my life and relate them to the lessons of the cards.
In 2005, I wrote, produced and performed a one-woman show, Tarot Reading: Love, Sex and Mommy, which played to sold-out houses at The New York International Fringe Festival. In 2006, I sold my memoir proposal to Dutton imprint, which published The Devil, The Lovers & Me: My Life In Tarot in hardcover. NAL published it in paperback the following year, which you can now buy for under two bucks on Amazon, as well as the Kindle version.
I still read cards for family, friends, and strangers at parties. If you would like a private reading or to book me for your next event, please contact me for pricing and availability.
On May 18th, I’ll be reading cards for women at the High Priestess Empowerment Workshop.
